学長からのメッセージ

The Japanese Red Cross Hiroshima College of Nursing was established in 2000 as the Japanese Red Cross Academy’s base college in the Chugoku and Shikoku regions. Based on the Red Cross
humanitarian philosophy, our aim is to develop highly skilled nursing professionals who can play a
wide range of roles in the fields of health, nursing care and welfare at home and abroad, and to
contribute to the development of nursing and the improvement of human wellbeing. To achieve
this goal, we aim to develop human caring practitioners with a rich sense of humanity, broad
cultural awareness, a global perspective, and the ability to protect life and dignity.

In 2004, we established the Graduate School of Nursing with a master’s program, and in 2016, in
collaboration with the other four universities of the Japanese Red Cross Academy, launched a
doctoral program. The master's course aims to develop advanced practical skills as well as the
research and educational skills needed as nursing professionals responding to the needs of the
times. The doctoral program is based on advanced practical knowledge, nurturing researchers
who can conduct independent research activities and research guidance, and educators who can
provide high-quality education and develop nursing based on sound theoretical reasoning that
takes into account the complexities of nursing. Doctoral students can adapt their study according
to their life conditions and career design, and, as a result of the program being conducted jointly,
have the advantage of being able to receive guidance from faculty members of five universities.

In the future society, it will become increasingly important to create new knowledge and
information, and to value and respond to change. Such a society requires not only specialized
knowledge but also nursing professionals equipped with inter-professional skills, and the ability
to recognize and solve problems independently. We aim to educate flexible learners who can
thrive in such a new society.

In 2020, we celebrated the 200th anniversary of the birth of the founder of modern nursing,
Florence Nightingale. This event led us to revisit her basic nursing principles, principles which
will continue to inspire us as we endeavor to promote evidence-based, student-centered
nursing education which provides solid nursing practice skills, and develops nursing professionals
who can become leaders in the promotion of health and wellbeing.

Our university has at the core of its educational philosophy humanitarianism, peace and human
caring. We value the history and tradition of Red Cross disaster nursing education, contributing
to nursing in Japan and abroad, and to the creation of a healthy city through cooperation and
collaboration with the local community.

As I write this message from the university, overlooking the rich natural environment surrounding
Itsukushima Shrine in Miyajima, a World Heritage Site, I would like to end by saying that our
teaching and administrative staff look forward to welcoming you – our colleagues and partners of
diverse backgrounds, regions and customs – to our university for learning, exchange of ideas and
exploration of knowledge.
